The Path to Canadian Citizenship
Canadian citizenship is the culmination of many immigrants' journeys. If you're a permanent resident, here's what you need to know to apply for citizenship in 2026.
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for Canadian citizenship, you must:
- Be a permanent resident of Canada
- Meet the physical presence requirement: 1,095 days (3 years) out of the 5 years immediately before you apply
- File your taxes for at least 3 years within the 5-year period
- Pass a citizenship test (ages 18–54) on Canadian history, values, and institutions
- Demonstrate language ability in English or French (ages 18–54) at CLB 4 or above
- Not be prohibited due to certain criminal convictions or immigration fraud
Calculating Physical Presence
Each day you were physically present in Canada as a permanent resident counts as one day. If you were in Canada as a temporary resident before becoming a PR, each day counts as a half-day (up to 365 days total). Keep records of your travel — border entries and exits are tracked.
The Citizenship Test
The test covers 20 questions on Canadian history, geography, economy, government, laws, and symbols. You need 15 correct answers to pass. IRCC provides the free study guide Discover Canada. The test is offered in English or French.
Language Requirements
Applicants aged 18–54 must demonstrate language ability at Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 4. Acceptable proof includes:
- Results from a third-party language test (IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF)
- Completion of secondary or post-secondary education in English or French
- Participation in certain government-funded language training programs
The Citizenship Ceremony
Once approved, you'll attend a citizenship ceremony where you take the Oath of Citizenship and receive your citizenship certificate. You can then apply for a Canadian passport.
